2nd Annual Fall River Flotilla, Saturday, November 6, 2004!

The Canoe Trail Goliad Committee invites you to participate in this year’s 2nd Annual Fall River Flotilla, a 6.5-mile paddle through lovely Goliad County, to be held on Saturday, November 6. All participants must register by e-mailing kccanoe@aol.com.

Participants who need a ride in a canoe will be matched with an appropriate paddle partner. Please e-mail Janie Holcombe at kccanoe@aol.com to reserve your spot.

Participants with their own canoes and personal flotation devices may begin the float as early as 9:00 a.m. at the Highway 59 / San Antonio River Crossing. From there, paddlers will proceed to the historic Ferry Street (Commercial Street) crossing, where Canoe Trail Goliad members will greet you with a walking map of Goliad’s historic town square.

Promote Goliad eco-tourism! Continue your trek on foot! Canoe Trail Goliad winds within 1/4 mile of downtown Goliad and its historic courthouse square. A restaurant, deli, antique and gift shops, sporting goods store, pharmacy, museum —and more—await you just off the river and up the hill.

Return to your canoe by 4:00 p.m. and continue on to Goliad State Park, where evening festivities continue. Activities include storytelling, a bon fire, and a barb-cue fundraiser plate.*

Join us on the river, then spend the evening celebrating it!

Canoe Trail Goliad Mission Statement

Canoe Trail Goliad promotes enjoyment and conservation of the natural, cultural, and historical resources of the San Antonio River in Goliad County by encouraging responsible, quality public access opportunities through citizen-led partnerships.

Canoe Trail Goliad Committee

Objectives: Led by citizens of Goliad County, the Canoe Trail Goliad Committee is a public-private partnership organized to

  • Create a safe, integrated system of access points along the San Antonio River,
  • Obtain sufficient project funding,
  • Encourage diverse and broad-based community participation in the project,
  • Offer opportunities to citizens and visitors through the trail system to learn about cultural, natural, and historic resources,
  • Cooperate with other local eco-tourism initiatives to contribute to the economic climate of Goliad County, and
  • Create a sustainable, effective organization to support project design, development, funding, and maintenance.

Meetings: The committee meets at the Goliad Depot, 5:30 p.m., on the third Monday each month. Citizens, civic groups, Goliad landowners, formal and non-formal educators, student groups, environmentalists—welcome!

Current Committee Activities

Access Point Designs: Having sought and obtained public input during three public meetings in the spring and summer of 2003, Canoe Trail Goliad is now incorporating that input into the development of conceptual designs for six proposed access points along the San Antonio River in Goliad County.   All proposed sites are on land owned by public entities.   They are as follows: Goliad Market Days: Look for the Canoe Trail Goliad information display at Goliad Market Days, the second Saturday each month through December.   Study the project map showing the proposed access points and the distances between each point.   Be sure to take home a Canoe Trail Goliad t-shirt for your donation of $15.   The display is located in the window of the old Bill's Discount Store, on the North side of the Courthouse.
